How to Choose the Right LED Video Wall Pixel Pitch

Pixel pitch is the single most important specification when choosing an LED video wall. It determines resolution, viewing distance, and cost. This guide explains what pixel pitch means and how to choose the right pitch for your project — without using product-specific claims or jargon.

What Is Pixel Pitch?

Pixel pitch (sometimes called dot pitch) is the distance between the centres of two adjacent LEDs on a display, measured in millimetres. It is written as P followed by the distance — for example, P2.5 means the LEDs are 2.5mm apart.

Pixel pitch directly affects resolution: the smaller the pitch, the more LEDs per square metre, and the higher the resolution. A P1.5 wall has roughly four times as many LEDs per square metre as a P3.0 wall of the same size.

Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance

The fundamental rule is: the closer your audience, the finer the pitch you need. If viewers are standing 2 metres from the wall, a P4 display will look pixelated. If they are 10 metres away, a P4 display will look sharp.

A common guideline is to divide the minimum viewing distance in metres by 2 to estimate the suitable pitch in millimetres. For 3 metres, that suggests P1.5. For 6 metres, P3.0. For 10 metres, P5.0. This is a starting point — actual requirements depend on content type and how critical image sharpness is to the application.

Indoor vs Outdoor Pitch Ranges

Indoor LED walls typically use pitches from P1.2 to P4. Boardrooms, control rooms, and close-viewing environments use P1.2–P2.5. Atriums, lobbies, and retail spaces viewed from 4–8 metres use P2.5–P4.

Outdoor LED walls use wider pitches — typically P4 to P10 — because the audience is further away and the displays are larger. A P6 or P8 outdoor wall viewed from 15+ metres looks sharp, and the wider pitch keeps the cost manageable for large-format installations.

Pitch and Cost

Finer pitch means more LEDs per square metre, which means higher cost. A P1.2 wall costs significantly more per square metre than a P4 wall of the same size. This is why it is important to choose the pitch that matches your viewing distance — over-specifying pitch wastes budget, while under-specifying results in a pixelated display.

The key is to identify the closest typical viewing distance for your installation, choose a pitch that delivers acceptable resolution at that distance, and avoid paying for resolution your audience will never see.

Other Factors to Consider

Brightness: indoor LED walls typically produce 800–1,200 cd/m². High-brightness indoor (for atriums or window-facing) produces 2,000+ cd/m². Outdoor produces 5,000–8,000 cd/m². Higher brightness adds cost.

Contrast ratio: higher contrast delivers deeper blacks and more vivid content. COB (Chip-on-Board) technology typically offers higher contrast than SMD, but at a higher price point.

Maintenance: consider front-service vs rear-service access. Front-service is essential if the wall is mounted directly against a solid surface with no rear access.

Getting It Right

Choosing the right pixel pitch is a balance between resolution, viewing distance, and budget. We assess your space, audience distance, content type, and environment during a site survey, then recommend a pitch that delivers the right image quality without over-specifying.

We supply and install LED video walls UK-wide, with full turnkey service from survey through to content management. Call us on 020 4548 3736 to discuss your project.
