Site Hoarding Graphics: What to Consider Before You Print
Site hoarding graphics transform a construction site perimeter from a plain timber fence into a branded, informative, or promotional space. But before you print, there are several practical considerations — from materials and durability to design and local authority requirements. This guide covers what to think about before printing hoarding graphics.
Hoarding Material Options
The most common substrate for hoarding graphics is printed PVC banner or rigid foam PVC panels. PVC banner is flexible, economical, and easy to fix to timber hoarding. Rigid foam PVC (such as Forex) is more rigid and gives a flatter finish, but costs more.
For longer construction programmes, consider aluminium composite (ACM/Dibond), which is more durable and weather-resistant than foam PVC. The trade-off is higher cost and heavier panels. We print using UV and latex technology, which produces UV-stable output suitable for outdoor exposure.
Design Considerations
Hoarding graphics are viewed from a distance and often from a moving vehicle or by pedestrians walking past. This means design should be bold, simple, and legible at speed. Large images, strong headlines, and minimal text work better than detailed copy.
Common content includes developer branding, project name, artist impressions of the finished development, contact details for the sales or marketing team, and planning information notices. For house builder sites, hoarding often promotes the development and directs visitors to the marketing suite.
Local Authority and Planning Requirements
Some local authorities have specific requirements for hoarding graphics, particularly in conservation areas or on prominent sites. There may be restrictions on the percentage of the hoarding that can be used for advertising versus project information, or requirements for artist impressions rather than promotional copy.
Check with your local planning authority before finalising artwork. We can advise on common requirements based on our experience, but planning conditions vary by authority and site.
Durability and Weather Resistance
Construction programmes can last from a few months to several years. Your hoarding graphics need to remain presentable for the full duration. UV-stable printing prevents fading, and weatherproof substrates prevent warping and water damage.
For long programmes, plan for one or more replacement cycles. Hoarding graphics exposed to full sun, wind, and rain will eventually show wear. We can plan a replacement schedule into the project so fresh graphics are ready when needed.
Installation Method
PVC banner is fixed to timber hoarding using battens or zip ties through eyelets. Rigid panels are screwed or nailed directly to the hoarding frame. The installation method affects both the finish and the cost — rigid panels give a flatter, more premium look but take longer to install.
We install hoarding graphics UK-wide using our certified installation teams. Alternatively, many site teams self-install banner graphics to save on installation costs, particularly for straightforward runs.
Sustainability
PVC-free and recyclable substrate options are available for hoarding graphics, which may be relevant for developments with sustainability targets or planning conditions. We can advise on eco-friendly material options that still deliver the required durability.
When the hoarding comes down, consider how the graphics will be disposed of or recycled. PVC banner is difficult to recycle, while foam PVC and some ACM panels have better recycling pathways. We can discuss end-of-life options during the quotation process.
